FULL-TIME TRACK LABORER

Please note that this position will work forty (40) hours per week. Full-time Track Laborers will work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed. |
SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:
Performs heavy manual labor activities, in all types of weather, to remove, install and maintain track including but not limited to: lifting rail sections; and handling rail during curving, cutting and drilling operations. Works under close supervision, following MBTA guidelines and procedures.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Uses and maintains a variety of implements and/or tools such as but not limited to lawn mowers, portable compressors, chain saws, paving breakers, pneumatic spiking guns and portable tie drills.
- Performs general track maintenance/construction laboring activities, such as spiking and shoveling in connection with tie and rail installations; and loading and offloading trucks and work trains. Works outside and in tunnels along electrified rails
- Performs cleaning operations as directed, such as removal of debris from rights of way and general housekeeping in shop areas including cleaning and oiling of pneumatic tools used in conjunction with portable air compressors.
- Operates the small power sweeper and performs all work associated with the operation of the steam cleaning machine.
- Operates small vehicles such as pickup trucks, vans and cars.
- Performs snow removal activities.
- Performs the duties of a Flagperson as directed.
- Works any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
- Responds to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker, in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the Authority’s “Driven by Customer Service” quality standard.
- Reports to work during declared states of emergency as essential personnel.
- Performs related duties and projects as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent (G.E.D.).
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Ability to successfully complete validated selection exam.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- A satisfactory driving record for at least three (3) years prior to the date of hire.
- A satisfactory non-renew display for tickets report from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
- Ability to pass background screenings including criminal background check, driving record check, educational verification, employment verification and references.
- Ability to pass selection interview.
Ability to meet the MBTA medical qualifying standards established for this position, including a drug and alcohol test.
- Ability to dead lift 100 pounds to the waist and walk 100 feet carrying fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to read, write, comprehend, speak and respond to instructions, posted signs, and inquiries in English.
- Ability to effectively communicate with customers, employees and vendors.
- Successful completion of the required probationary period of 120 working days.
- Availability to work twenty four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
