PART-TIME STREETCAR MOTORPERSON

$19.81 an hour effective July 1, 2009
(Note: New hires will be paid $10.00 an hour during training.)

     HOURS:
Please note that this position will work a maximum of thirty (30) hours per week. Most Part-time Streetcar Motorpersons will work split shifts covering both the morning and evening rush hours.

SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

Operates an MBTA surface vehicle, assuming responsibility for the safety of passengers and equipment. Performs routine vehicle inspections to ensure proper operation. Collects designated fares from passengers and assists in emergency situations. Works under occasional supervision, following MBTA guidelines and procedures.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operates surface line vehicle along assigned routes. Operation of the surface line vehicle includes picking up passengers, collecting fares, checking passes and ID cards for validity, protecting revenue collected according to defined procedures, sitting for extended periods of time, pushing and pulling weight to operate a rail switch, and some exposure to vibrations, noise, airborne particles and fumes.
  2. Inspects and/or tests the vehicle (including, but not limited to, brakes, lights, sander, signs, doors, buzzers, horn and bell) to ensure serviceable condition. Reports and identifies mechanical problems or defects to the appropriate authority.
  3. Operates surface line vehicle maintaining appropriate speed and distance from preceding vehicles.
  4. Ensures that proper signs are displayed and changed as needed during the run. Announces destination at all stops and gives proper information to passengers.
  5. Issues emergency transfers when service is interrupted. Notifies the Central Control Surface Dispatcher of any emergency, requesting additional assistance if needed. Evacuates passengers if the emergency situation warrants action and the Inspector or Chief Inspector is not available to make the decision. Operates onboard fire extinguisher.
  6. Maintains adequate knowledge of the MBTA system in order to provide routine information and directions to the public.
  7. Refers disputes over ID validity or fare collection to the official in charge of the station. Produces a written report to the Superintendent if the dispute is not resolved.
  8. Prepares accident reports as required.
  9. Responds to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker, in a courteous and professional manner consistent with the Authority’s “Driven by Customer Service” quality standard.
  10. Reports to work during declared states of emergency as essential personnel.
  11. Performs related duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent (G.E.D.).
  2. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  3. Ability to successfully complete validated selection exam.
  4. Possession of a valid driver's license.
  5. A satisfactory driving record for at least three (3) years prior to the date of hire.
  6. A satisfactory non-renew display for tickets report from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles.
  7. Ability to pass background screenings including criminal background check, driving record check, educational verification, employment verification and references.
  8. Ability to pass selection interview.
  9. Ability to meet the MBTA medical qualifying standards established for this position, including a drug and alcohol test.
  10. Ability to read, write, comprehend, speak and respond to instructions, posted signs, and inquiries in English.
  11. Ability to effectively communicate with customers, employees and vendors.
  12. Successful completion of the required probationary period of 120 working days.
  13. Availability to work twenty four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
